Marshall and
Sara Gandy have raised their four daughters in
Richardson since 1987. Like many fathers, Marshall
began coaching recreational sports when his daughters
were old enough to play; beginning in 1992 with T-ball
and soccer, and later softball and volleyball. In 1998,
he served as a Softball League President for the Spring
Valley Athletic Association before focusing his coaching
energy on volleyball. Marshall served on the Board of
Directors and as a Volleyball League Coordinator at the
Plano Sports Authority from 2003-2005 planning weekly
and tournament play for more than 30 teams during the
fall, spring and summer seasons. Marshall has been
IMPACT certified since 2002 and received his USA
Volleyball Coaching Accreditation Program Level I
certification in 2008 after completing 20 hours of
classroom and court training during the 2008 USA Junior
Olympic Girls Volleyball Championships.
In 2003 after coaching recreational volleyball for eight
years, Marshall founded the Boom Volleyball Club to give
his youngest daughter and her PSA teammates an
opportunity to play club volleyball together. Later in
2004, Marshall received his certification as a USAV
referee. Marshall coached and directed Boom until
joining the Nitro coaching staff for the 2005-2006 club
season. During the 2007-2008 season, Marshall and
Heather Potter successfully coached the 12’s National
team to a 5th place ranking in the North
Texas Region and a bid to the 2008 USA Junior Olympic Girls
Volleyball Championships.
Marshall is a life-long resident of Dallas graduating
from Hillcrest High School in 1970. He attended Sam
Houston State University where he graduated magna cum
laude with a degree in Criminal Justice in 1974. He
later attended SMU Law School where he earned his Juris
Doctor before beginning the practice of law as an
Assistant District Attorney for Dallas County. In 1989
after 10 years in the District Attorneys Office,
Marshall was appointed as a criminal court judge where
he served for 10 years founding the first family
violence court in the state of Texas. After leaving the
bench, Marshall served as Senior Trial Counsel for the
United States Securities and Exchange Commission in Fort
Worth from 1999-2007 prosecuting violations of the
federal securities laws. In January 2008, Marshall
accepted a position with the Financial Industry
Regulatory Agency (FINRA) as the Senior Regional Counsel
in its Dallas office.
Marshall’s wife, Sara, teaches at Mohawk Elementary
School in Richardson. His two older daughters attend
Texas A&M University and the University of Oklahoma, and
his two younger daughters, who have played for Nitro
teams, attend Pearce High School in Richardson.

My first experience with
volleyball was when I was 4 and my parents played on a
team in our neighborhood league in West Milford, New
Jersey. All the kids would go down to the court on the
lake and watch our parents play volleyball while we
built sandcastles. Volleyball was not a sport that was
played at a young age in New Jersey during the
late-1980s so when we moved to Dallas in 1993 I was so
excited to get my first chance to play and I continued
to play for the next 10 years. I played at St. Mark in
Plano, for a Club team and at Ursuline Academy until
1999 when we moved to Atlanta, Georgia. There I joined
Cobb Atlanta Juniors Volleyball Club and played Varsity
at Walker High School. I decided to go to Miami
University instead of playing in college. I worked for
the varsity volleyball team at Miami my first year,
traveling with them on the road and tracking all of the
stats and I also played a lot of intramural indoor and
outdoor volleyball while at Miami. To this day I still
have an incredible love for volleyball and am always up
for a game. I am a firm believer that no matter your
height or your natural talent, if you work hard enough
on the fundamentals and are always willing to sacrifice
your body for the ball, you can be an incredible player
and major asset to your team. I am really looking
forward to getting back into the volleyball life and
helping young girls enjoy the sport as much as I did.
This is her second year with Nitro.
